Abbott's Mill Garden is a lovely little garden which contains Sully's Orchard, an old orchard on the banks of the River Stour where the boat trips from the centre of Canterbury turn round. You can still see the machinery and the two mill races from the original mill at the northern end of the garden. The 6 storey Abbott's Mill (see photo) was the tallest building in Canterbury after the Cathedral, until it burned down in 1933, and was owned by Thomas Sidney Cooper, the famous livestock painter and it was designed by John Smeaton, who also built the Eddystone Lighthouse. If you exit the garden by the North entrance on Mill Lane and then turn left across St. Radigund's Street just to the North, you can continue walking along the banks of the Stour for over half a mile; a lovely walk, where in the crystal clear waters of the river, with a bit of luck you can see trout and pike and also herons and little egrets.
